PayPay Doesn't Work in China — Set Up Alipay Instead (2026)
PayPay has zero acceptance in China. Chinese merchants use Alipay (支付宝) and WeChat Pay — both now support foreign Visa and Mastercard. Set either up before departure.
Why PayPay Doesn't Work
PayPay is a closed domestic system operating only within Japan's payment infrastructure. Chinese merchants have no mechanism to accept it. There is no adapter, no workaround, and no partial support. PayPay QR codes and barcodes are incompatible with Chinese point-of-sale terminals at a fundamental protocol level.
What You'll See at a Chinese Merchant
When you try to scan a Chinese QR code with PayPay, nothing happens — the QR format is incompatible. If a merchant tries to scan your PayPay barcode, their system returns "payment method not supported" or times out. The cashier will not know what PayPay is. You will need cash or an alternative app to proceed.
Setting Up Alipay Step by Step
-
Download Alipay
Install Alipay (international version) from the App Store or Google Play. It is available worldwide.
-
Enter the International User flow
Open the app → tap the globe icon top-left → select “International User”. Do not use the standard registration flow — it will ask for a mainland China bank card.
-
Verify your identity with your passport
Me → Verify Identity → Passport. Upload a clear photo with no glare, no flash, even indoor lighting. Your name must match exactly including middle names.
-
Add your international card
Me → Bank Cards → Add Card. Visa and Mastercard only. Call your bank before your trip to pre-authorize China transactions — many banks block foreign charges by default.
-
Test with a small payment before relying on it
Try a small transaction at a convenience store before your trip depends on Alipay. If it fails, you still have time to troubleshoot.
If Card Linking Fails: Tour Pass
Search “Tour Pass” in Alipay. Choose a top-up amount (¥100, ¥200, ¥500, or ¥1000). Pay once with your foreign card. The balance becomes an RMB wallet that works at all merchants. Validity: 90 days from activation. This bypasses all per-transaction card issues because the foreign card charge happens only once at top-up.
WeChat Pay as Backup
The setup process mirrors Alipay: WeChat → Me → Services → Wallet → Add Card. The same foreign Visa and Mastercard support applies. Having both Alipay and WeChat Pay provides redundancy — if one fails at a specific merchant or has a technical issue, the other covers you. Some wet markets and small vendors display only one QR code.
Field Notes
- “Arrived in Tokyo → Shanghai and confidently opened PayPay at 7-Eleven. The cashier had never heard of it. Spent 5 minutes while the queue grew. Had to use cash.”
- “Alipay Tour Pass saved me — regular card linking failed twice, but Tour Pass worked first try. Loaded ¥500, covered the whole trip.”
- “WeChat Pay worked at a wet market in Chengdu where Alipay QR was personal (rejects foreign cards). Always have both.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PayPay work in China?
No. PayPay is a Japan-only payment system. Chinese merchants have no mechanism to accept it. There is no workaround or adapter. You must use Alipay or WeChat Pay in China.
What can I use instead of PayPay in China?
Alipay (支付宝) and WeChat Pay are the two dominant payment platforms in China. Both now support foreign Visa and Mastercard. Set up at least one before you fly — identity verification is easier on fast internet at home.
What is the Alipay Tour Pass?
Tour Pass is a prepaid RMB wallet inside Alipay. You load it once with your foreign card (¥100, ¥200, ¥500, or ¥1000) and pay from the RMB balance at any merchant. It bypasses per-transaction card issues and is valid for 90 days.
