DiDi App: All Chinese, Card Rejected.
The Mini-Program Is English and Works.
What Changed and Why This Happens
DiDi previously offered a separate "DiDi International" app in English with support for foreign payment methods. That app is no longer reliably available. The version of DiDi now in Chinese app stores is the domestic app — entirely in Chinese, designed for users with Chinese phone numbers and bank accounts.
The mini-programs embedded inside Alipay and WeChat are different products. They are designed for the international-user use case, present the interface in English, and route payments through whichever foreign card you've already linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay — requiring no additional registration.

How to Access DiDi via Alipay
The search bar on Alipay's home screen searches both services and mini-programs. Type "DiDi" (or 滴滴) and the mini-program appears as a result.
It loads directly inside Alipay — no separate app download, no install prompt. The interface defaults to English if your phone language is set to English.
The mini-program needs your GPS location to set the pickup point. Allow it. Your current location appears on the map as the default pickup address.
Type your hotel or address. Select Express (快车) for a standard car. Confirm the pickup point and tap Book. Payment uses your Alipay-linked card automatically — no card entry required.
How to Access DiDi via WeChat
The path inside WeChat is slightly different. From the WeChat home screen, swipe down to open Mini-Programs. Search "DiDi" or "滴滴". Alternatively, go to the Discover tab → Mini-Programs → search DiDi. Payment routes through WeChat Pay using your linked card.
At the Airport: Rideshare vs. Taxi
At Pudong (PVG) and Beijing Capital (PEK), DiDi pickup zones are separate from taxi queues and are clearly signed. Follow signs for "网约车" (Online Ride-hailing) or "DiDi." The pickup point is not the same as the metered taxi rank.
If you land late and the pickup zone is confusing, metered taxis at the official taxi rank accept cash (¥) and sometimes WeChat/Alipay — ask before getting in. The Alipay QR flip method (show your code, ask them to scan) works with most taxi meters that have a scan pad.
What Travelers Actually Reported
- "I actually thought the DiDi mini-app via Alipay worked extremely well. Never had any issues booking a ride." — r/ChinaTravel
- "The standalone DiDi app was completely unusable — I couldn't read anything and my card was rejected. The Alipay mini-program took 2 minutes to figure out and worked perfectly." — r/solotravel
- "One critical thing: turn off your VPN to allow booking. Took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out why no drivers were showing." — r/ChinaTravel
- "Used DiDi via WeChat for two weeks across 4 cities. Same prices as locals. Only issue was one driver who didn't come to the exact pickup pin — had to call them which was awkward with no Chinese." — r/China
- "For airport pickups specifically: find the 网约车 sign, not the taxi sign. They're 5 minutes apart on foot and it matters if you've been traveling for 18 hours." — r/ChinaTravel

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an English version of the DiDi app in China?
The standalone DiDi app available in mainland China app stores is entirely in Chinese with no English option. The DiDi mini-program inside Alipay or WeChat, however, is available in English and is the recommended path for foreign visitors. Search for 'DiDi' inside Alipay or WeChat to access it.
Can I use a foreign credit card with DiDi in China?
Not directly in the standalone DiDi app — it typically rejects foreign cards at registration. The DiDi mini-program inside Alipay or WeChat pays automatically using your linked foreign card in those apps. If you've already set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your Visa or Mastercard, the DiDi mini-program charges that card with no additional registration.
Does the DiDi mini-program in Alipay work the same as the full app?
For booking rides, yes. You enter your destination, choose a car type, confirm the pickup point, and book — same flow as the main app. The mini-program does not have all features of the full app (no ride history sync, no subscription features), but for a foreign visitor's core use case of booking a taxi or express ride, it works identically.
