How to Buy Train Tickets in China as a Foreigner — 2026 Guide

China's high-speed rail (高铁, gāotiě) network is one of the most impressive in the world. It covers over 45,000 km of track, connects virtually every major city, and runs trains at up to 350 km/h. A journey from Beijing to Shanghai — roughly the same distance as London to Rome — takes around 4.5 hours. For foreign visitors, the network is both a practical necessity and one of the genuine highlights of travelling in China.

Buying tickets as a foreigner does require a few extra steps compared to local travellers. This guide covers both routes: the official 12306 platform and the foreigner-friendly alternative Trip.com.

China High-Speed Rail — What You Need to Know

China's intercity trains are operated by China Railway The most common train types you will see on tickets:

Seat classes on G/D trains: Second Class (二等座) is the standard option — comfortable reclining seats in a 3-2 layout. First Class (一等座) is wider with a 2-2 layout. Business Class (商务座) has fully reclining seats and is priced accordingly.

Option 1 — 12306 (Official App / Website)

12306 is the official ticketing platform run by China Railway. It has the best availability, the lowest prices (no booking fee), and allows seat selection. The interface now has an English option, though it is not perfect — some pages remain in Chinese.

Registering on 12306 as a Foreign Passport Holder

  1. Open the 12306 app or visit www.12306.cn and tap Register.
  2. Select Foreign Passport (外籍证件) as your ID type.
  3. Enter your passport number exactly as it appears on your passport — including any leading letters.
  4. Enter your full name in the format printed on your passport. The system stores this in Latin characters. Do not abbreviate or add a middle name unless it is printed on the passport.
  5. Enter your date of birth, nationality, and a valid email address.
  6. Set a password and complete the SMS verification using your international phone number.
  7. After registration, go to Account → Passenger Information and verify that your passport details are saved correctly. This passenger profile is what gets printed on every ticket you buy.

Searching and Booking a Train

  1. On the home screen, enter your departure city, destination, and travel date.
  2. Results show all available trains ordered by departure time. Tap a train to see available seat classes and prices.
  3. Select your seat class. If you want to choose a specific seat (window vs aisle, direction of travel), tap the seat map icon — this is available on most G and D train bookings.
  4. Confirm passenger details, review the total, and pay. 12306 accepts international Visa and Mastercard, as well as Alipay and WeChat Pay.
  5. Your ticket is stored digitally in the app. You can also collect a physical ticket at the station (see below).
On busy travel dates — Chinese public holidays, Spring Festival, Golden Week — tickets sell out very quickly. The 12306 system opens ticket sales 15 days before departure. Set a reminder and book as early as possible if you are travelling during a holiday period.

Option 2 — Trip.com (Foreigner-Friendly Alternative)

Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) is an English-language travel platform that sells China Railway tickets with an English interface throughout. It charges a small booking fee (typically ¥15–30 per ticket) but removes the friction of 12306's registration process.

Trip.com is the better starting point if:

  • You have just arrived and do not have time to set up 12306
  • You want a fully English booking experience from start to finish
  • You are booking a one-off trip and do not expect to buy train tickets regularly

Seat selection is available on Trip.com, and the ticket is delivered as an e-ticket linked to your passport number — the same way as 12306.

Yes. Many frequent travellers use 12306 for domestic trips where they have time to plan, and keep Trip.com as a backup for last-minute bookings or when the 12306 interface is uncooperative. The tickets are functionally identical — both are linked to your passport in China Railway's system.

Collecting Your Ticket at the Station

China Railway uses a real-name (实名制) ticketing system. Your ticket — physical or digital — is tied to your passport number. When you arrive at the station:

  1. Self-service machines (自动取票机) are available at all major high-speed rail stations. Select "Foreign Passport" on the screen, scan your passport, and the machine prints your physical ticket.
  2. Staffed ticket windows are available as a fallback. Bring your passport and your booking reference number (shown in the 12306 app or your Trip.com email confirmation).
  3. If you have the 12306 app, you can use the digital ticket QR code directly at the turnstile at many stations — no physical ticket needed.

At the boarding gate, you will pass through a security check and show your passport alongside your ticket. Keep your passport accessible throughout the journey — ticket inspectors occasionally check during the trip.

Real-Name Ticketing — What This Means for Foreigners

China's real-name ticketing system means:

  • One ticket per passenger — tickets cannot be transferred. The name on the ticket must match the document you present at the station.
  • Passport spelling must be exact — if your 12306 account or Trip.com booking has your name entered incorrectly, the ticket will be rejected at the gate. Double-check every letter.
  • Children under 1.2 m travel free but must be registered on the booking with their own passport or travel document.
  • Ticket changes and refunds are possible through 12306 or Trip.com, but refund fees apply depending on how close to departure you cancel.

Common Questions

No. 12306 is the official railway booking platform and is accessible without a VPN. In fact, using a VPN with 12306 can sometimes cause connection issues — if you have a VPN running, try disabling it when using the 12306 app or website. Yes, if seats are available. The self-service machines accept foreign passports and most major credit cards. For popular routes on busy dates, same-day tickets are often sold out — book in advance whenever possible. Yes. The 12306 app is available on the App Store and Google Play internationally. You can register, browse, and book tickets before you arrive in China. Payment requires a Chinese bank card or linked Alipay/WeChat — or use the international card option which became more reliable in 2025. Go to any ticket window at a rail station with your passport. Staff can reprint the ticket after verifying your identity against the booking. There is usually a small reprint fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can foreigners buy China train tickets online?

Yes. The two practical options are the official 12306 app or website (which has an English interface) and Trip.com, which is the most foreigner-friendly — full English, international cards, and customer support in English.

Do I need a Chinese phone number to buy train tickets?

No. 12306 registration can be completed with your passport and email; Trip.com works with international phone numbers and cards.

What is real-name ticketing in China?

Every train ticket is tied to an ID document. As a foreigner, your ticket is linked to your passport — book with the exact name on your passport and bring that same passport to the station.

Do I need to collect a paper ticket?

No. China's high-speed rail is ticketless — scan your passport at the station gates to enter and board. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes early at large stations for security and passport checks.

How far in advance can I buy China train tickets?

Tickets are typically released about 15 days before departure on 12306. Popular routes (Beijing–Shanghai, holiday periods) sell out within hours — book the moment sales open.

选项 2 — Trip.com(对外国人友好的替代方案)

Trip.com(前身为 Ctrip)是一个英文旅行平台,提供全程英文界面的中国铁路车票销售。

Trip.com
