China eSIM Guide for Travelers — Best Options, Setup, and What to Know (2026)

An eSIM is the easiest way to get data in China before you even step off the plane. You download and activate it at home, it works the moment you land, and you keep your home number active on the same phone. The catch: you need to choose the right type of eSIM — mainland China eSIMs have real-name registration requirements that can be a barrier for foreign passports, while international and Hong Kong options sidestep this completely.

eSIM vs Physical SIM — What's the Difference?

A physical SIM is a small card you slot into your phone. An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital profile you install wirelessly — no card, no hardware swap. Your phone holds multiple eSIM profiles simultaneously, so you can keep your home number active while running a China data plan on the same device.

For China travel, the practical advantages of eSIM are real:

The main limitation: most international eSIMs provide data only, with no local Chinese phone number. For most travelers this is fine — WeChat and Alipay both register with your home number.

Your eSIM Options for China

Option 1 — International eSIM Services (Airalo, Nomad)

Services like Airalo and Nomad sell short-term data eSIMs for China (and most other countries) through their own apps. You buy a plan, scan a QR code, and install the eSIM profile in minutes.

Airalo

One of the most widely used international eSIM marketplaces. Offers China data plans ranging from 1 GB to 20 GB with validity periods of 7 to 30 days. Activate from the Airalo app before departure. Data only — no local phone number included. Prices typically start around $5–8 USD for a 1 GB / 7-day plan.

Nomad

A clean, traveler-focused eSIM app with competitive China data pricing. Similar plan structure to Airalo — data only, activate before landing. Worth comparing prices for your specific trip length as rates vary by package size.

Saily

A newer travel eSIM app from the team behind NordVPN. Simple setup, China data plans at competitive prices, data only. A solid third option to price-check alongside Airalo and Nomad before you buy. Use code GO2CHINA for 10% off any plan.

RECOMMENDED Holafly

Unlimited data eSIM for China — no GB cap, just a fixed daily price. Activate from the Holafly app before departure. Covers mainland China, works on all major networks. Use code GO2CHINA for 5% off any plan (10% off for 12-month subscriptions).

What these eSIMs can and cannot do: International eSIMs route data through mainland China networks. They give you a stable internet connection — but they do not bypass China's internet filtering. Sites like Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram are still blocked. You will still need a VPN installed in advance if you want to access those services. See Do I Need a VPN in China? for the full picture.

Option 2 — Hong Kong SIM or eSIM

A Hong Kong SIM or eSIM is arguably the most flexible option for most foreign travelers. Hong Kong uses a different network infrastructure from mainland China — internet filtering that applies on the mainland does not apply there. Many Hong Kong carrier plans include data roaming into the mainland.

Hong Kong Roaming SIM / eSIM

Carriers like China Mobile Hong Kong, 3 HK, and SmarTone offer eSIM plans that cover both Hong Kong and mainland China. When you cross into the mainland, the SIM roams onto China's networks. Because the SIM is registered in Hong Kong, it does not require mainland real-name registration. Some plans also include a Hong Kong phone number — useful if you want a number outside the mainland system. Available online and activated before departure.

The downside: Hong Kong roaming plans are often more expensive per GB than a dedicated mainland plan, and roaming speeds vary by carrier and region. For short trips to major cities they are generally more than adequate.

Option 3 — Mainland China Carrier eSIM (China Mobile, China Unicom)

Mainland carriers offer eSIM plans directly, and some airports have carrier counters where you can purchase a tourist SIM package on arrival. These offer the best data rates and the most reliable coverage — especially outside major cities.

The catch for foreign visitors: mainland China SIM cards (including eSIMs) require real-name registration (实名制) with a valid ID document. For Chinese nationals this is a national ID card. For foreign visitors it is your passport. At airport counters, staff will scan your passport and complete the registration. For online purchases, the process varies by carrier and can be difficult to navigate without a Chinese-language interface or a local contact to help.

If you buy a mainland eSIM online before your trip, verify the registration process works for foreign passports before purchase — not all resellers support it cleanly.

Which Option Should You Use?

For most foreign travelers, a Hong Kong eSIM or an international eSIM (Airalo/Nomad) is the recommended starting point. Here is the reasoning:

If you are staying longer than two weeks, traveling to rural areas, or need the lowest possible data rates, a mainland carrier SIM purchased at the airport is worth the extra step at the counter.

How to Activate Your eSIM Before Landing

Activation must happen before you board. This is the most important practical step.

  1. Buy your plan in the Airalo, Nomad, or carrier app — compare plan sizes; 5–10 GB is enough for most 1–2 week trips with moderate use
  2. Follow the QR code install instructions — go to Settings → Mobile / Cellular → Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager on Android
  3. Label the eSIM clearly (e.g. "China Trip") so you can switch to it easily
  4. Set it as your data line but keep calls / SMS on your home SIM — this way you receive verification texts on your home number while using cheap China data
  5. Test it before you fly — some eSIMs activate immediately, others take a few minutes; confirm it shows a signal before you board

Device Compatibility

Most flagship phones from 2020 onwards support eSIM, but there are exceptions.

iPhone: iPhone XS (2018) and later support eSIM. iPhones purchased in mainland China may be physical-SIM-only (Apple sold dual-physical-SIM models in China until 2023). Check Settings → General → About → scroll to see if "Available SIM" or "eSIM" appears.

Android: Samsung Galaxy S20 and later (most regions), Google Pixel 3 and later, and most 2021+ flagship Android phones support eSIM. Note: some Android handsets sold specifically for the Chinese market have eSIM disabled or removed. If you bought your phone in mainland China, confirm eSIM support before purchasing a plan.

Tip: You can check your phone's eSIM compatibility without buying anything — go into your SIM settings and look for an "Add eSIM" or "Add Mobile Plan" option. If it is there, your device is compatible.

Cost Comparison

Option Coverage Local Number Real-Name Reg Typical Cost
Holafly eSIM Mainland China No No ~$15–25 / 7 days (unlimited)
Airalo / Nomad eSIM Mainland China No No $5–15 / 7 days
Hong Kong eSIM HK + mainland roaming Optional No $10–25 / 7 days
Mainland carrier SIM (airport) Mainland China Yes Yes (passport) ¥50–150 / 7 days
Home carrier roaming Mainland China Yes No $10–20/day (varies)

Home carrier roaming is listed for completeness — it is almost always the most expensive option and not recommended for data-heavy travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does eSIM work in China?

Yes. International travel eSIMs (Airalo, Nomad, Holafly, Saily) and Hong Kong roaming eSIMs work across mainland China on the major carrier networks. Install and activate the eSIM before you board your flight — activation after landing can fail. Note that a standard eSIM gives you data but does not unblock Google, WhatsApp, or Instagram.

Is eSIM allowed in China?

Yes, using an eSIM in China is completely allowed for foreign visitors. International eSIMs roam onto Chinese networks legally. The regulated part is mainland-issued SIMs, which require real-name registration with a passport — foreign travelers simply avoid this by using an international or Hong Kong eSIM instead.

Do I need a VPN in China if I have an eSIM?

It depends on the eSIM. Mainland-routed eSIMs (most Airalo and Nomad China plans) give you data on Chinese networks, so blocked sites stay blocked — you still need a VPN. International roaming eSIMs and Hong Kong eSIMs route traffic outside the mainland filter, so WhatsApp and Google usually work without a VPN. Check whether your plan is mainland-routed or international-roaming before buying.

Which eSIM is best for China travel?

For most travelers: Holafly if you want unlimited data at a fixed daily price, Airalo or Nomad if you want the cheapest small data packages (from around $5), and a Hong Kong eSIM if you want open internet access without a VPN. Staying over two weeks or heading to rural areas? A mainland carrier SIM from the airport counter gives the best rates and coverage.

Can I activate a China eSIM after landing?

Do not count on it. eSIM activation needs a stable internet connection and sometimes a waiting period, and new-profile activation can fail on restricted networks at the airport. Buy, install, and test your eSIM at home — it takes about five minutes and the plan's validity usually only starts when the eSIM first connects in China.

Do foreign visitors need real-name registration for a China eSIM?

Only for mainland-issued SIMs and eSIMs — those require passport registration (实名制) at a carrier counter or through an online process that can be hard to navigate in English. International eSIMs (Airalo, Nomad, Holafly) and Hong Kong eSIMs require no mainland real-name registration at all, which is why they are the recommended option for short trips.

(Airalo, Nomad)

Airalo

Nomad

Saily

Holafly

SIM/eSIM

选项3——中国大陆运营商eSIM(中国移动、中国联通)

对于大多数外国游客,香港eSIM或国际eSIM(Airalo/Nomad)是推荐的起点。

  3. 清晰标记eSIM(例如“中国旅行”),以便轻松切换

Holafly eSIM
Airalo / Nomad eSIM

国际旅行 eSIM(Airalo、Nomad、Holafly、Saily)和香港漫游 eSIM 均可在中国大陆的主要运营商网络上使用。

大陆路由的 eSIM(大多数 Airalo 和 Nomad 中国套餐)在中国网络上提供数据,因此被屏蔽的网站仍然被屏蔽 — 你仍然需要 VPN。
