China App Troubleshooting — Fix Common Issues
Most Chinese apps work well for foreign visitors once the initial setup is complete. The problems below are the ones that come up most frequently — account verification, payment cards, and network restrictions. Find your app and work through the relevant questions.
Alipay (支付宝)
- Passport photo glare or blur — retake in even indoor lighting. Avoid windows, flash, and shadows. All four corners of the passport must be visible.
- Name mismatch — enter your name exactly as printed on the passport, including middle names and hyphens. One character difference will fail verification.
- Try the WeChat Mini-Program path — open WeChat → search "支付宝国际版" → the identity verification flow there is sometimes more lenient for foreign passports.
- Wait 24 hours and retry — repeated failed attempts trigger a temporary lock. Wait a day before trying again.
- Accepted cards: Visa, Mastercard, and Amex only — Discover, UnionPay (non-Chinese), and most debit cards are not supported for international users.
- Enable overseas and online transactions — log into your bank app or call your bank. Many banks block international e-commerce by default.
- 3D Secure prompt may not appear — some banks require a one-time SMS to authorise. Check your bank app's notification settings.
- Use a credit card, not debit — international debit cards face more restrictions on Alipay than credit cards.
- Payment QR codes expire quickly — close Alipay fully, reopen it, and generate a fresh QR code before scanning.
- Check balance and card limit — Alipay shows an error if the linked card has insufficient funds or has hit its daily limit.
- Merchant code may be expired — ask the cashier to refresh their QR code on their device.
- Use WeChat Pay as backup — most merchants that accept Alipay also accept WeChat Pay. Having both active prevents any single failure from blocking a purchase.
- Tap the globe icon on the home screen — top-left area of the Alipay home screen. Tapping it switches to the International User view with English labels.
- If no globe icon — go to Me → Settings → General → Language → English.
- Some menus stay in Chinese — the international mode covers the key flows (pay, scan, card management). Use Baidu Translate's camera mode for anything else.
WeChat (微信)
- Friend verification is mandatory — a new WeChat account must be approved by an existing user who has been active for 6+ months. There is no way around this step.
- Share your QR code first — screenshot your WeChat QR code and send it to your contact before asking them to scan, so they know what to expect.
- No contact available — Reddit communities r/chinavisa and r/China sometimes have people who help with verifications.
- Complete identity verification first — Me → Pay → Wallet → ID Verification. WeChat Pay requires a verified account before you can add a card.
- Accepted cards: Visa and Mastercard only — Amex, Discover, and most debit cards are not accepted for international users.
- Enable international payments on your card — log into your bank app to confirm overseas and online payments are enabled.
- Set up Alipay as backup — Alipay has a more mature international user flow and often accepts cards that WeChat Pay rejects.
- Switch networks — try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or vice versa. Hotel and corporate Wi-Fi often blocks WeChat's mini-program servers.
- Clear WeChat cache — Me → Settings → General → WeChat Storage → Clear Cache.
- Restart WeChat — force-close the app completely and reopen it. Most loading issues resolve on restart.
- Switch to mobile data — hotels, airports, and corporate networks in China often block VoIP. Mobile data nearly always works.
- Check permissions — confirm WeChat has microphone and camera access in your phone settings.
- Use voice messages instead — hold the microphone icon in chat to record a voice note. These use standard data and are rarely blocked.
DiDi (滴滴)
- GPS must be enabled — DiDi requires location access. Go to your phone settings and confirm location is set to "Always" or "While Using" for DiDi.
- In a basement or mall — GPS signal is weak indoors. Step outside before opening the app and setting your pickup point.
- Coverage gaps — DiDi covers 400+ cities but not every rural area. In very small towns, taxis may be the only option.
- Don't pick up the phone call — use the in-app chat instead. It has auto-translate: type your message in English and the driver sees it in Chinese.
- Screenshot your destination in Chinese — show the driver your destination written in Chinese characters if there's any confusion about where you're going.
- Drop a pin on the map — drag your pickup pin to the exact spot you're standing. Drivers navigate by map pin, not address text.
- Add a card inside DiDi directly — go to DiDi → Me → Wallet → Add Payment Method. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
- Link Alipay or WeChat Pay — paying through a Chinese e-wallet avoids card acceptance issues entirely. If you have Alipay or WeChat Pay set up, link one of those to DiDi.
- Enable overseas transactions on your card — same issue as Alipay. Call your bank or enable online/overseas payments in your banking app.
Amap / 高德地图
- This is normal in China — China uses a different coordinate system (GCJ-02) from the international GPS standard (WGS-84). Amap applies the correct offset; Google Maps does not, which is why Google Maps looks wrong in China.
- Enable high-accuracy location — in your phone settings, set location mode to "High Accuracy" (uses GPS + Wi-Fi + mobile network). GPS-only is less accurate indoors and in urban canyons.
- Calibrate by walking a short distance — if the blue dot is offset, walk 20–30 metres in a straight line. The app recalibrates as it gets more GPS readings.
- Tap the profile icon — bottom-right corner of the main map screen → Settings → Language → English.
- App Store version may differ from mainland version — if you downloaded Amap inside China, the version may have fewer English options. Download from your home country App Store for the version with English support.
- Re-download on Wi-Fi — offline map packages sometimes download incompletely on mobile data. Delete the city map and re-download on a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Check storage space — each city map is 50–200 MB. If your phone storage is near full, the download will fail silently.
- Enable offline maps in settings — after downloading, go to Me → Offline Maps and confirm the city package shows as "Downloaded" not "Updating".
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Alipay card payment declined in China?
The most common causes: the merchant's QR code is a personal account (which cannot accept foreign cards), your bank blocked the transaction as fraud, or a network glitch. Ask the merchant for their merchant QR (look for the reverse-scan option where they scan you), and notify your bank about China travel before the trip.
Why can't I receive SMS verification codes in China?
International roaming SMS can be delayed or filtered. Keep your home SIM active with roaming on, request the code again on Wi-Fi, and prefer apps that offer email or in-app verification as an alternative.
WeChat asks for friend verification — what do I do?
WeChat sometimes requires an existing user to vouch for new registrations. Ask any friend or colleague who has used WeChat for a while to scan your verification QR code — it takes them under a minute and is a routine anti-spam step.
Why does DiDi show high prices at the airport?
Airport demand peaks trigger dynamic pricing. Walk to the designated ride-hailing pickup zone (airports have signed areas), compare ride types — Express vs Premier — or check the price again after a few minutes.
Why does my map show the wrong location in China?
China uses the GCJ-02 coordinate system, so foreign map data appears offset. Use Amap or Baidu Maps for accurate positioning, and note that GPS accuracy also drops indoors and in dense high-rise areas.
