Alipay Tour Pass for Foreigners: Prepaid RMB Wallet Guide (2026)
Alipay Tour Pass (旅行通) is a prepaid RMB wallet inside the Alipay app designed for international visitors. You load it once with your foreign Visa or Mastercard, and from that point on you pay merchants in RMB directly from the wallet — currency conversion happens once at the top-up rather than on each purchase.
What Is Alipay Tour Pass?
When you link a foreign card directly to Alipay and pay at a merchant, your card issuer converts the RMB charge to your home currency in real time. Most international Visa and Mastercard issuers charge a foreign transaction fee of 1–3% on every single conversion. Over a two-week trip with dozens of small payments — bubble tea, metro rides, street food — that adds up.
Tour Pass works differently. You convert a lump sum of foreign currency into RMB once, load it onto the Tour Pass wallet, and then every payment you make in China draws from that RMB balance. The result: one conversion event, many fee-free transactions.
Tour Pass vs. Direct Foreign Card Payment
| Tour Pass | Foreign Card on Alipay | |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion timing | Once, when you top up | Every transaction |
| Foreign transaction fees | Charged once on the top-up | Charged on each payment |
| Spending currency | RMB (fixed at top-up rate) | Your home currency (real-time rate) |
| Best for | Multiple payments, longer trips | Occasional or one-off use |
How to Set Up Tour Pass
You need a working Alipay account first. If you haven't set one up yet, follow the Alipay setup guide before continuing.
Open Alipay and go to the home screen
Tap the search bar at the top and type "Tour Pass" (or 旅行通). The feature card will appear — tap it.
Start the Tour Pass activation
Tap "Get Tour Pass". You may be asked to confirm your identity details if you haven't completed verification yet.
Choose a top-up amount
You will be presented with preset amounts in RMB (e.g. ¥200, ¥500, ¥1000) or you can enter a custom amount. The app will show you the equivalent in your card's billing currency before you confirm.
Pay with your foreign card
Select your linked Visa or Mastercard (or add one at this step). Confirm the charge. Your Tour Pass wallet is credited in RMB immediately.
Pay at merchants from Tour Pass
When you tap "Pay" in Alipay, the app will default to Tour Pass balance if it is available. You do not need to change any setting — it draws from Tour Pass first.
Topping Up
You can top up Tour Pass at any time from within the app. Return to the Tour Pass card, tap "Top Up", choose an amount, and confirm with your foreign card. You can top up as often as your trip requires, subject to the limits below.
There is a single top-up maximum (typically ¥5,000 per transaction) and a total balance cap (typically ¥50,000). For a standard tourist trip these limits are more than sufficient.
Validity and Balance Refunds
Tour Pass balance does not roll over indefinitely. The wallet has an expiry period — typically 90 days from the date of the last top-up, though Alipay can adjust this. Check the expiry date shown on your Tour Pass screen.
If you have remaining balance when it expires, or if you want a refund before expiry, you can request a refund to the original card within the Tour Pass section. Refunds typically take 3–7 business days to appear on your card statement.
Notes from Real Travelers
- Top up in smaller amounts (¥300–¥500) rather than a large sum — if your balance expires or you leave early, a smaller unused balance is easier to recover.
- Tour Pass balance does not work for all merchant types. Some specialized or institutional payment terminals only accept direct card or local bank payments. In practice this is rare for typical tourist spending.
- The exchange rate applied when you top up is set by Alipay's payment processor, not your card issuer — compare it to your bank's rate before loading a large amount.
- WeChat Pay has a similar feature called "WeChat Pay for Visitors" — if you use WeChat Pay primarily, check that app for the equivalent option.
- Tour Pass balance shows in the Alipay home screen as a separate line item from your linked card — it is easy to track how much you have left.
Who Should Use Tour Pass?
Tour Pass is worth setting up if:
- You are staying in China for more than a few days and expect to make many small payments
- Your card charges a foreign transaction fee on every purchase
- You want price certainty — locking in an exchange rate upfront rather than getting a different rate on each transaction
- You find it annoying to enter a PIN or approve a charge for every ¥15 coffee
You can skip Tour Pass if:
- You have a no-foreign-transaction-fee travel card and don't mind per-transaction conversion
- You are only in China briefly and will make just a handful of payments
- You prefer to keep flexibility and pay at the real-time exchange rate
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Alipay Tour Pass?
Tour Pass is a prepaid RMB wallet inside Alipay designed for foreign visitors. You top it up with an international card and spend the balance by scanning merchant QR codes — no Chinese bank account needed.
Tour Pass vs linking a foreign card directly — which is better?
Linking your international card directly in Alipay now covers most payments and is simpler. Tour Pass remains useful if your card declines direct linking, or if you prefer to preload a fixed travel budget.
Can I use Tour Pass everywhere Alipay is accepted?
Almost everywhere — it works for standard merchant QR payments, which is the vast majority of shops, restaurants, and taxis in China.
Does Tour Pass balance expire?
Tour Pass has a validity period — check the current terms in the app when you top up. Unused balance can be refunded back to your linked card per the in-app refund process.
Do I need a Chinese phone number for Tour Pass?
No. It works with your international phone number and passport verification inside the Alipay app.
